Evelyn Glennie is a Scottish percussionist who lost her hearing gradually by the age of eleven due to nerve damage. 

Despite her hearing impairment, she was determined to pursue music. She learns to “feel” sound through her body rather than hearing it with her ears. 

With encouragement from percussionist Ron Forbes, she studies at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and achieves top grades. 

She gives performances, even free concerts, and receives many awards (e.g. “Soloist of the Year” by the Royal Philharmonic Society in 1991) as a recognition of her extraordinary musical ability.

Part 2 – Bismillah Khan

Ustad Bismillah Khan is a legendary Indian shehnai player. He popularized the shehnai, creating beautiful tunes and improvisations that brought the instrument to fame. 

From young age, he was inspired by the flowing river Ganga. He often played shehnai at temples like Kashi Vishwanath. 

In 1938, during the inauguration of All India Radio at Lucknow, he got wider recognition. On India’s Independence Day, he was among those who performed and greeted the nation with his shehnai. 

He received many high civilian honours: Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and Bharat Ratna.
